Built In DVD & Display Shelf into Stairway

Dec 20, 2007

I own a new townhouse is that ruffly 1600sq feet, making use of that space is important and certain looks/styles make the place look bland or like an apartment.

One of the biggest offenders in my place was this blank wall under the stairs to the upstairs. I had this stupid little country shelf where crap just got thrown and the rest was blank.

My solution was to build a built in shelf, one that would hold DVDs since we were lacking a good solution up until this point.

1) Commit to project by putting foot through wall, then remove all the drywall and 2x4s
2) Build the frame (from 2x6s)
Then start to layout your shelves. I started in the top right. In my head I knew what I wanted, but mostly made it up as I went.
The use of 1" masking tape made laying out where shelfs "could" go very easy an fast to change before actualy using wood.
3) So I skipped a few steps, but in short I've added a plywood back that I painted a ralph lauren textured green that matches otherwalls downstairs. I've also added a few coats of primer on top of my sanded and finished wood that I used spackle on to hide joints.

I was going for a fairly modern look and I think I accomplished it. Laying this out from top right to bottom left proved to be tricky, and I will say a more common layout would certainly make this project much easier (although more boring)...
