Weather API? I need history...

Jun 20, 2008

I'm working on a side project that is racing related and I need to retrieve weather data for upwards of the last two years or at least all of 2007.

I don't want weather forcasts, thats easy to find. I'm looking for a weather report for what happened on dayX at zip code or lat/lon X/X. Even better would be if I could give more specific time information...

Does anyone have experience with a product that will allow me access to this information?

TIA

I didn't look real deep, but it looks like the National Climate Center has data going back to the 1800s. You might try looking there. You might try looking here: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/mpp/digitalfiles.html Also, I happen to be in Iowa and Iowa State University offers a TON of data through their Iowa Environmental Mesonet: http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu

I have had a couple conversations with Weather Bug. They've asked me what I was looking for and said that they have had high interest in this type of feature... I'm still waiting for them to get back to me. Otherwise the best I've come up with so far has bee the Farmers Almanac. No API though... http://www.almanac.com/weatherhistory/custom/index.php

It's not much other than a bone but a \"get weather history\" has been added to the feature list for Weather Bugs API. Weather Bug Rep: Russell This is not a feature we have right now. Your feature request has been made and I will see what we can do to get it into the next release of our API. We do have a release planned for the second half of the year. -Chris

to gixxerblade: Thanks for posting the link! The site doesn't provide XML API access to history data, but using formatted URLs you can easily obtain CSV data for date ranges. Excellent resource. Thanks again!

to Joe T. : Can you provide such source code which obtains CSV data?

to Noam: i didn't actually develop to the point of using this approach. We ended up taking a different path for weather data. However, if you hunt around with the wunderground.com history links, you'll see patterns in the directory paths that you end up getting. It's not made obvious, but instead of knowing Weather Station codes, you can replace with ZIP codes or airport codes (i think), then construct paths based on dates and (if i recall right) types of results. Sorry i can't remember most of it. Like i said, i didn't get very far down that path, just saw it as a possibility.

to Joe: Thanks for the help. Did you find a different way the get history of weather data? Maybe through an XML API?

The Wunderground site offers an XML API, i think. But it wasn't the kind of data i needed, or something. Fuzzy memory. My project was to develop a corporate order writing app for a horticulture company. Weather being key in writing good orders, this was something i needed to incorporate. We ended up finding a company with such an application already built, and includes a weather data module. i don't know where their data comes from, but i think it's NOAA.

Hi,
I am looking for an API that publishes historical weather data as well...based on a lat/lon query. Did you find of of any such service? Please let me know as well. Thanks

I found a weather api link (http://www.worldweatheronline.com/free-weather-feed.aspx) via. google search and it seems they might do a historical weather feed by lat/lon. Not sure whether it is free? May be get in touch with them.
